Fashion History – 1980s Power Dressing The 1980s gave us memorable and distinctive fashions, none more so that the power dressing phenomenon. In the eighties there was a lot of tailoring, both men an women would throw on a smart blazer over a t-shirt and often wear a complete suit. Born in the second half of the 1970s and developed in the 1980s, power dressing is a fashion style that enables women to establish their authority in a professional and political environment traditionally dominated by men. The reason behind the sudden popularity of shoulder pads for women in the 1980s may be that women in the workplace were no longer unusual, and wanted to "power dress" to show that they were the equals of men at the office. Many women's outfits had Velcro on the inside of the shoulder where various sized shoulder pads could be attached. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the power suit became one of the most iconic silhouettes of 20th century fashion, mostly known for its popularity in America. Driven by designer Giorgio Armani, the power dressing movement disguised the feminine form with an exaggerated masculine silhouette.
